Abstract
Sustainable fashion refers to clothing and accessories that, while maintaining indicators of beauty, creativity, and art in design, aims to realize the three dimensions of sustainable development: environmental, economic, and social. Fish skin, as a renewable and biodegradable raw material, has recently emerged as an innovative sustainable material. In the past, it had limited traditional uses, but today, despite the increasing production volume, it is often discarded, causing environmental pollution or being used in low-value applications. Recently, global luxury brands such as Dior and Galliano have revived its use in contemporary fashion. In Iran, despite the high production of fish and its by-products, this potentially valuable bio-based material remains largely unknown, and no comprehensive scientific assessment has been performed on its applicability in clothing. Therefore, this study investigates the key physical and mechanical characteristics of Iranian-produced tilapia fish leather for apparel applications. To answer the research question and after studying library resources, the first nine practical tests such as tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and rubbing test were conducted on tilapia leather produced in Iran based on National Standard 78, and then a comprehensive comparison was made with other natural leathers and international standards to introduce this sustainable and innovative material to the Iranian clothing industry. The research findings show that tilapia leather produced in Iran has good mechanical strength, durability, and aesthetic quality, which can make it a suitable and sustainable alternative material for use in clothing and fashion accessories.
