Fabrication of magnetic carbon fibers with three-dimensional structure from Luffa sponge for the separation of oily pollutants from water

Oil spills and oily pollutants in aquatic environments represent a serious global environmental challenge. In this study, a cost-effective and sustainable approach was developed to fabricate three-dimensional magnetic carbon fibers derived from natural loofah sponge. The loofah precursor was pretreated with phosphoric acid and subsequently carbonized, while magnetic properties were introduced through the thermal decomposition of cobalt chloride salt, leading to the formation of cobalt and cobalt oxide nanoparticles. Thermal treatment was carried out at 500 °C, 650 °C, and 800 °C, and the equilibrium oil sorption capacities of the resulting samples were found to be 32.18 ± 0.21 g/g, 30.20 ± 0.32 g/g, and 20.33 ± 0.39 g/g, respectively. The results demonstrate that the produced carbon fibers not only exhibit high oil sorption efficiency but also enable rapid and facile recovery due to their magnetic nature. Overall, this work presents a simple and low-cost strategy for converting loofah waste into advanced magnetic carbon adsorbents with promising applications in oil spill remediation and environmental protection.

A Data-Driven Framework for Classification and Similarity Assessment of Persian Carpets Using K-Means Algorithm

This study was conducted with the aim of designing an objective classification system for authentic Iranian carpets. The research findings provide a basis for developing a global carpet classification system, which could lead to the establishment of a quantitative valuation index and an integrated certification system. In this regard, a comprehensive database of 99 museum carpet samples was collected, containing 12 parameters related to structure, design, and raw materials. To achieve these objectives, K-means clustering algorithm with Euclidean distance and k=3 was employed based on the elbow method, and the samples were divided into three homogeneous clusters based on knot density, material composition, and pile material. The main innovation of this research lies in converting traditional and subjective criteria into objective indices, enabling direct comparison of new carpets with historical samples. This system not only increases valuation accuracy but can also lead to pricing transparency, development of global markets, greater buyer confidence, the possibility for buyers to purchase according to their taste and interest in carpets from a specific region, and providing a basis for trust in sellers' opinions.

Explaining the Continuity of Motivation, Job Satisfaction, and Job Burnout with the Mediating Role of Performance Strategies in the Textile Industry

The aim of this study is to propose a model for examining the mediating effect of performance strategies in the relationship between job burnout, motivation, and job satisfaction in textile processes, particularly in the production of synthetic fibers. This topic is of significant importance due to the increase in employee motivation in textile production sectors and the reduction of stress and its impact on personnel burnout. The present research is applied in terms of its objective and correlational in terms of its research method. Data were collected using a survey method through simple random sampling from 425 personnel involved in the melt spinning process in textile factories. The data collection instruments included the Maslach and Jackson standardized burnout questionnaire, the Minnesota standardized job satisfaction questionnaire, and a researcher-designed performance strategy questionnaire based on previous studies. To describe the data, the validity and reliability of the questionnaires were first assessed using PLS software. Descriptive statistics were then calculated, and for analyzing the relationships between variables, exploratory factor analysis was conducted using SPSS27, followed by confirmatory factor analysis using PLS software. The results of the analyses showed a high correlation between the latent variables of job burnout, motivation, job satisfaction, and performance strategies (as second-order factors in factor analysis) with their respective latent sub-factors. Furthermore, the effects between the three factors were confirmed based on their significance values, which were all below 0.05. In summary, the results indicated that performance strategies in textile production processes, particularly in synthetic fiber production, have a significant impact on employees’ job satisfaction, motivation, and burnout. Therefore, it is essential to shift from traditional management approaches to modern performance strategy methods.

Technology Transfer Process in the Leather and Footwear Industry: Integrating Theoretical and Empirical Evidence within a Multi-Grounded Theory Framework

The primary objective of this study is to design an indigenous, problem-oriented framework for technology transfer in Iran’s leather and footwear industry. To achieve this aim, the Multi-Grounded Theory (MGT) approach was employed. In the first phase, a meta-synthesis of 59 scholarly articles published between 2003 and 2025 was conducted to identify and integrate the key components of technology transfer. Subsequently, empirical data were collected through 18 semi-structured interviews with industry experts and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. The findings led to the identification of six critical stages in the technology transfer process: technology assessment and needs analysis, alignment with local infrastructures, partner selection and transfer strategy, technology absorption and localization, organizational learning and empowerment, and cyclical monitoring and development. The final model, derived from the integration of theoretical and empirical evidence, provides a practical and indigenous framework for managing technology transfer in the leather and footwear sector. The novelty of this research lies in the development of a stage-based, context-specific, and dynamic model that not only emphasizes local learning clusters and institutional engagement but also incorporates environmental considerations and sustainability into the technology transfer cycle. As such, the proposed model represents an innovative framework that can be extended to related industries such as textiles and apparel.

A Review of the Scope of Application and Development of Natural Dyes

The growing awareness of pollutants from the textile industry and synthetic dyes has led to a revolutionary shift in the textile sector towards sustainability. At the heart of this movement is the search for eco-friendly alternatives to conventional synthetic dyes and mordants, which often pose serious risks to human health and the environment. This search is progressing rapidly. Research findings have shown that natural dyes—traditionally derived from plant, animal, or mineral sources—have become promising alternatives to synthetic dyes due to their environmental compatibility and sustainability. Scientists are increasingly focused on understanding the chemical structures of these dyes, developing a wider range of color shades, discovering new natural dye sources, and overcoming the limitations of natural dyes. This article reviews the results of extensive research on the latest developments in identifying eco-friendly dye sources and bio-based mordants, as well as strategies for reducing the environmental impact of mineral mordants. It also presents the latest achievements in various dye extraction methods, including modern technologies such as ultrasonic extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, and microwave-assisted extraction, in comparison to traditional methods. The efficiency and functional properties of natural dyes are also discussed, including medicinal benefits, deodorizing effects, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, moth repellence, and UV protection. Research results indicate that, despite the growing application of natural dyes across different scientific fields and the documented contributions of countries and researchers in this domain, there is still a need for more in-depth studies to adapt natural dyes to dyeing machinery and to improve dyeing efficiency and quality.

This research investigates the constructive role of online attractiveness on social media presence and influence within the apparel industry. The methodology employed is a mixed-methods approach. The initial qualitative phase involved content analysis and projective technique interviews, targeting purposefully selected experts, utilizing MAXQDA software. The second quantitative phase used Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to determine the strength of relationships between factors and examine the validity of each construct, employing PLS (Partial Least Squares) software. The statistical population for the quantitative segment comprised all social media users in Mazandaran Province who shop online for apparel. Considering the population as infinite, the sample size was determined to be 384 individuals based on Cochran’s formula. Qualitative findings identified online attractiveness comprising four components: website appeal and ease of access, frequency and variety of goods and brands, purchasing accuracy, and prestige. In the quantitative phase, findings demonstrated that online attractiveness has a strong influence (T-Value=42.72) on presence across platforms, with Instagram securing the highest priority. Ultimately, the proposed four-component conceptual model offers a systematic framework for apparel industry managers to strategically enhance their brand influence in the digital sphere by focusing on optimizing “online attractiveness” on key platforms; this underscores the necessity of an integrated approach based on these four core components.

This research focuses on the technical study of carpet weaving and dyeing in Malayer township, with an emphasis on the central and Zand regions and Nahavand township. The decline in the interest in carpet weaving in these regions compared to the past, along with the developments in the carpet sales market, has led to the forgetting of data related to the indigenous carpet weaving heritage of this region. This event has resulted in the forgetting and decline of the knowledge of the region's weavings. By identifying the carpet weaving knowledge, the authenticity of the region's indigenous carpet knowledge is preserved against machine-made carpet imitations and the cultural status of this carpet weaving tradition and knowledge is introduced. This study is exploratory and was conducted with the aim of documenting, classifying and matching the technical characteristics of Hamedan carpets with emphasis on the two counties of Malayer in the central part and Zand and Nahavand county. This article is of fundamental type and the method of descriptive-analytical research and the method of field data collection were used and the research background was a library study. The sampling was purposeful and based on the opinions of experts and carpet producers in this region, 32 carpets were selected. The results show that carpet weaving in these two regions is similar in terms of weaving tools, raw material, production management mechanism and weavers. In Malayer, due to double-weaving, the carpets are more resistant than Nahavand carpets in terms of resistance, while the color range used in Malayer handlooms is more diverse. In terms of the location of carpet weaving, Malayer handlooms are urban and rural, and Nahavand handlooms are rural, and the variety of motifs in Nahavand handlooms is greater than in Malayer.

Evaluation of the characteristics of tilapia leather produced in Iran for use in clothing with a sustainable fashion approach

Sustainable fashion is clothing and accessories that, while maintaining the indicators of beauty, creativity, and art in fashion, achieve the three goals of sustainable development, including environmental, economic, and social. Fish skin, as a sustainable raw material, has been separated from its original function in the not-so-distant past and, despite the increase in production volume, is generally left in nature, which is environmentally destructive or has a low value-added use, but it has recently attracted the attention of leading global brands such as Dior and Galliano. In Iran, due to the high volume of fish and its skin production, this sustainable raw material is not known and no comprehensive research has been conducted to investigate its characteristics. Accordingly, in order to investigate the characteristics and specifications of fish leather produced in Iran and to assess its suitability for use in clothing production, based on National Standard 78, nine practical tests such as tensile strength, tear strength, and rubbing test were conducted on tilapia leather produced in Iran. A comprehensive comparison with other natural leathers and international standards was then conducted to introduce this sustainable and innovative material to the Iranian apparel industry. The research findings showed that tilapia leather produced in Iran has good mechanical strength, durability, and aesthetic quality, which can make it a suitable and sustainable alternative material for use in apparel and fashion accessories.

Effect of air jet spinning machine parameters on the characteristics of viscose yarns

Air-jet vortex spinning technology has emerged as a prominent method in the textile industry, owing to its superior production speed and the distinctive properties of the produced yarn. Nevertheless, the physical and mechanical performance of vortex-spun yarns is critically depend on the complex synergy between production parameters and yarn linear density (count). Consequently, an in-depth investigation into the interaction of these variables is imperative to optimize the production process and ensure consistent quality in different yarn counts. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of production speed, spinning draft and break draft (each at three levels) and yarn count (at two levels) on the physical and mechanical properties of airjet vortex yarns. For this purpose, in order to accurately investigate the effect of the main variables on yarn properties and reduce the number of samples, a fractional factorial experimental design was used. According to this experimental design, 18 yarn samples were produced using Autoairo1 airjet spinning machine in two counts of 30 and 36 Ne. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of the produced yarns—including tensile strength at break, elongation at break, hairiness, and mass irregularity(CVm)—were evaluated and statistically analyzed. Additionally, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the structure of air-jet yarns and the configuration of wrapper fibers were examined. The results revealed that the investigated variables had differing effects on the two yarn counts. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that production parameters, such as spinning speed and spinning draft, have a direct influence on yarn structure, particularly on the distribution pattern of the wrapper fibers in the yarn structure. Production speed and break draft showed a significant effect at the 95% confidence level on the hairiness of the yarns, and with increasing production speed, hairiness showed an increasing trend. Also, spinning draft showed a significant effect on the breaking strength of the produced yarns, and a decrease in breaking strength was observed with increasing spinning draft.

In this study, anthocyanins extracted from red cabbage were employed as natural dye for dyeing cotton fabrics. To optimize the dye extraction process, a factorial experimental design was applied to investigate the effects of three independent variables: extraction solvent (distilled water, ethanol, methanol, citric acid, and sodium hydroxide), extraction temperature (40°C, 60°C, and 90°C), and extraction time (1, 2, and 4 hours). After analyzing the color strength (K/S) of dyed cotton fabrics obtained from each extract, the optimal extraction condition was identified. Subsequently, the extract obtained under optimal conditions was used for dyeing in the presence of both metallic mordants (tin and aluminum) and natural mordants (pomegranate rind and sumac). The results revealed that all three parameters, solvent type, extraction time, and extraction temperature, significantly influenced the color strength, hue, and chroma of the dyed fabrics. The best result in terms of color strength (1.96) was achieved using ethanol as a solvent, at 60°C and an extraction duration of 2 hours. Among the used mordants, tin provided the highest color strength (1.96) and color saturation (21.03), while the natural mordants, pomegranate rind and sumac (rhus), yielded warmer and more varied hues, along with superior light fastness (up to grade 6). The light fastness of the samples mordanted with tin and aluminum ranged from grade 4 to 4-5. Also, the results showed that all mordanted samples exhibited very good wash fastness (grade 4 to 4-5).

Redesigning Industrial Development Policies in Iran’s Apparel Sector Based on Value Chain Analysis

Despite possessing substantial human capital and a large domestic market, Iran’s apparel industry accounts for only a negligible share of the global apparel market. This study employs a hybrid thematic analysis with methodological triangulation to systematically examine the strategic challenges of Iran’s apparel industry and to propose comprehensive development strategies from a value chain perspective. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 17 industry experts, complemented by an analysis of official reports and national and international statistics. The findings indicate that Iran’s apparel industry is caught in a low value-added trap, with the majority of activities concentrated in the cut–make–trim (CMT) stage, while higher value-added segments—including design, branding, and international marketing—remain largely underdeveloped. Five major challenge domains were identified: (1) limited access to high-quality raw materials and significant dependence on imports; (2) weak design capabilities due to insufficient intellectual property protection; (3) fragmented, workshop-based production structures characterized by low productivity; (4) unfavorable consumer perceptions toward domestic products, leading to the prevalence of foreign branding practices (the use of foreign labels by domestic producers); and (5) an inefficient institutional environment marked by widespread smuggling and fragmented policymaking. Based on these findings, the study proposes several strategic directions: strengthening textile–apparel linkages through regional clusters and collaborative R&D initiatives; institutionalizing intellectual property protection and promoting indigenous innovation in design and Islamic fashion and modest wear; advancing industrialization and digital transformation in production processes; supporting the development of national and cluster-based joint brands; and establishing a unified policy coordination mechanism for the apparel industry. By providing an integrated assessment of value chain bottlenecks and coherent policy directions, this study offers a strategic framework to enhance the competitiveness of Iran’s apparel industry in domestic and international markets.

The Influence of Green Product Perception of Handmade Carpets on Consumer Behavior and the Domestic Market Expansion

Iranian handwoven carpets are recognized as green products due to their traditional production processes and the use of natural materials. In recent years, however, they have lost ground in the domestic market as consumers increasingly shift toward industrial, machine-made alternatives. Accordingly, the present study seeks to propose strategies for strengthening the market position of handwoven carpets in Fars Province by emphasizing their environmental benefits and competitive pricing. It further examines the extent to which raising consumer awareness of these attributes can influence their attitudes and purchasing behavior. This research adopted a descriptive-analytical methodology combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, with both library and field data collection. A total of 78 participants were selected in Shiraz through non-probability convenience sampling. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale and analyzed through ordinal scale techniques, including the calculation of means and standard deviations. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were confirmed by experts and through Cronbach’s alpha. The findings reveal that environmental awareness positively affects consumers’ willingness to purchase handwoven carpets and can serve as a competitive advantage. Nevertheless, economic factors such as income level and purchasing conditions remain decisive in consumer choice. Accordingly, it is recommended that carpet unions and retailers enhance consumer trust and strengthen the market position of handmade carpets by employing advertising strategies, consumer education, and the use of the term “Iranian Green Carpet.” In addition, offering coarsely woven carpets such as Gabbehs from Fars Province at reasonable prices can facilitate purchases by middle-income groups and promote the development of the domestic market.

A review on aramid nanofibers: Manufacturing, properties, applications, and environmental challenges

Aramid nanofibers (ANFs) are at the forefront of emerging nanomaterials and are recognized for their outstanding properties, including high tensile strength, high modulus, and excellent thermal and chemical stability. These advantages have paved the way for a wide range of applications in composites, energy systems, protective fields, adsorption processes, and even innovative biomedical products. Despite the growing interest in functional ANF-based composites and their applications in advanced fields, there is still a lack of comprehensive reviews addressing recent fundamental and applied developments. This review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of aramid nanofibers. First, the structure and classification of aramid fibers (para-, meta-, and co-para-aramid) are introduced. Subsequently, the main fabrication methods for aramid nanofibers, including mechanical disintegration, polymerization-induced self-assembly, chemical/mechanochemical deprotonation, and electrospinning, are comparatively reviewed. The importance of post-processing treatments, particularly the removal of residual salts and thermal post-treatments such as hot pressing and thermal annealing, in enhancing the integrity, crystallinity, and thermo-mechanical durability of nanofibrous layers is examined. Furthermore, the distinctive characteristics of ANF-based composites, especially in relation to specific applications, are carefully analyzed. Finally, key challenges such as improving interfacial bonding, long-term stability, scalability, and reducing the environmental impact of processing methods, along with the need for standardized characterization techniques, are highlighted as future directions to facilitate the transition of this technology from laboratory-scale research to industrial applications.

Feasibility Study of Establishing Centers for Supplying Raw Materials for Handwoven Carpets (Case Study: West and Northwest of Iran)

One of the most important links in the value chain of handwoven carpet production and trade is the supply, production, and distribution of raw materials. This link is highly complex and specialized due to the variety of raw materials used in producing colored wool yarns (carpet pile yarns), cotton, and silk, as well as the diversity of supply locations. Given the wide geographical distribution of carpet production across Iran, the types and characteristics of raw materials used vary greatly, adding further complexity to this sector. This research studies the potential for establishing supply and distribution centers for raw materials in the northern provinces of Iran (East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, and Ardabil) and the northwestern provinces (Kurdistan, Kermanshah, and Ilam). Data were collected through expert interviews and questionnaires, and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively using statistical methods to test three main hypotheses: the impact of establishing such centers on the quality of produced carpets, the reduction of production costs, and the effect on the final price of carpets.
The findings indicate that the establishment of raw material supply centers has a significant positive impact on cost reduction and raw material quality, and consequently on the final price of carpets in production regions. Moreover, these centers help reduce monitoring and quality-control expenses due to regional concentration. Regular and organized supervision by standardization experts and technical inspectors ensures the consistent quality of raw materials, thereby contributing to overall quality assurance. The study also examines the current situation of raw material supply, production, and distribution on a national scale and within the target provinces. It compares the existing capacities, domestic production, imports, and current consumption levels of raw materials. Furthermore, the main components of the supply, production, and sales chain for yarns used in handwoven carpets were identified. Based on these analyses, practical recommendations are proposed for establishing necessary production units by province and creating specialized raw material sales centers in each city to strengthen the handwoven carpet industry’s supply chain.

The role of metal-organic frameworks in improving the acoustic performance of textiles and lightweight foams: A study on properties, mechanisms, and applications

In recent decades, noise pollution has emerged as one of the most significant environmental and public health challenges in urban, industrial, and transportation environments, creating an urgent demand for lightweight, thin, and multifunctional sound-absorbing materials. Textiles, porous foams, and fibrous aerogels have attracted considerable attention as promising noise-control platforms due to their low weight, flexibility, and ease of integration into various structures. However, their acoustic performance is often limited, particularly at low frequencies and under thickness constraints. In this context, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), characterized by exceptionally high specific surface area, tunable porosity, low density, and tailorable surface chemistry, have emerged as highly promising candidates for enhancing the acoustic properties of these materials. This review provides a comprehensive and analytical assessment of the role of MOFs in improving the acoustic performance of polymeric foams, textiles, and fibrous aerogels. The influence of MOF type, pore architecture, substrate characteristics, and fabrication/attachment methods on sound absorption behavior is comparatively discussed. The reviewed studies demonstrate that MOF families such as ZIF, UiO, MIL, HKUST-1, and FeBTC can significantly enhance acoustic performance through the formation of hierarchical macro–meso–micro porous structures, increased tortuosity, optimized airflow resistivity, enhanced viscous–thermal dissipation, localized resonances, and improved acoustic impedance matching. Among the investigated substrates, MOF-based aerogels exhibit the greatest potential for broadband sound absorption due to their multiscale porous networks and outstanding performance-to-weight ratio, whereas MOF-modified textiles and foams offer important advantages in terms of flexibility, durability, and industrial applicability. The review further reveals that although MOFs can substantially improve sound absorption at medium and high frequencies, efficient low-frequency sound attenuation remains a major challenge. The development of gradient architectures, multilayer systems, and MOF-based acoustic metamaterials is therefore highlighted as a promising strategy for overcoming this limitation. In addition, key challenges including mechanical and moisture stability, adhesion to substrates, synthesis cost, scalability of production, and the lack of standardized acoustic evaluation protocols are critically discussed. Finally, future research directions are outlined, emphasizing multiscale hybrid architectures, multifunctional smart acoustic textiles, green synthesis routes, and the integration of data-driven design and machine learning approaches for the development of next-generation acoustic materials.

Development of Antibacterial Cotton Wound Dressings Using Kamala Natural Dye and Bio-Mordants: Evaluating the Efficacy of Mordanting Techniques Against Nosocomial Pathogens

Infections caused by bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli are among the factors threatening the health of patients. Conventional cotton wound dressings lack antimicrobial properties and provide suitable conditions for bacterial growth, leading to delayed wound healing, increased risk of secondary infections, and antibiotic resistance. The use of wound dressings containing plant pigments with antibacterial properties has been considered as a novel approach for infection control. The aim of this study was to use a natural dye extracted from the fuzz of Kamala fruit (agricultural waste) for dyeing cotton bandages and gauze. This plant has high antimicrobial activity due to its phenolic and tannin compounds. In order to enhance dyeability and increase antibacterial activity, aqueous extracts of black tea, plantain, pomegranate peel, black myrobalan, and cumin were used as bio-mordants in both pre-mordanting and post-mordanting methods. The results showed that samples dyed with pomegranate peel, plantain, and black tea extracts had effective antibacterial activity against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. The highest inhibitory effect was observed in samples that were first dyed with Kamala natural dye and then mordanted with plantain and pomegranate peel. These findings demonstrate the high potential of the studied plant compounds for producing antibacterial wound dressings and their therapeutic applications.

Fabrication of ZnTiO₃/Cellulose Nanocomposite Nanofibers Derived from Pine Cone Waste via Electrospinning

Pinecones, due to their phenolic compounds, antioxidant properties, and high cellulose content, are considered a valuable and renewable resource for the production of advanced materials. In this study, cellulose was extracted from pinecones, and nanocomposite nanofibers containing different amounts of ZnTiO₃ nanoparticles (0.00, 0.50, 1.00, and 1.50 wt%) were fabricated using the electrospinning method. FESEM images revealed that the produced nanofibers had a uniform structure with an average diameter of 44 nm, and the nanoparticles (size ≤20 nm) were well dispersed within the cellulose matrix. Quantitative antibacterial evaluation according to the AATCC 100-2004 standard showed that the sample without nanoparticles (A) exhibited only 63% antibacterial activity, while the sample containing 1.00 wt% ZnTiO₃ (C) showed more than 91%, and the sample containing 1.50 wt% (D) showed more than 95% bacterial growth inhibition. In the anti-inflammatory test (carrageenan-induced mouse paw edema), the nanocomposites exhibited significant effects from the second hour onward and approached the effect of indomethacin (control drug) by the fifth hour. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the samples increased from 2.94 MPa in sample A to 3.79 MPa in sample D, indicating an improvement of approximately 29%. The most important achievements of this research include: (1) successful fabrication of ZnTiO₃-containing cellulose nanofibers with diameters below 50 nm, (2) achieving over 95% antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, (3) demonstrating an anti-inflammatory effect comparable to the standard drug, and (4) significant improvement in mechanical strength with the addition of minimal amounts of nanoparticles. These results indicate that the produced nanofibers are an effective, biocompatible, and sustainable option for applications in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and advanced textile industries.
