Porous carbons derived from bacterial cellulose (BC) exhibit significant potential for applications in supercapacitors and electrochemical sensors, owing to their unique networked architecture and high biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the low electrical conductivity inherent in un activated samples remains a primary impediment to their practical application. In this study, the impact of chemical activation using potassium carbonate (K2CO3) on enhancing the electrical properties of BC-derived carbon was investigated. K2CO3 was selected to induce controlled porosity while concurrently preserving the continuity of the conductive carbon pathways. The results showed that the activation process under optimal conditions (10% by weight) resulted in a significant reduction in electrical resistance from 4.5 Ω to 1.2 Ω, representing a more than 4.5-fold increase in electrical conductivity (from 0.0472 to 0.2122 S/cm). This structural enhancement was characterized by increased porosity and specific surface area (from 800 to 1400 m2/g via BET analysis), alongside the retention of the nanofibrous morphology as evidenced by SEM observations. These findings suggest that K2CO3 activated BC carbon serves as a highly efficient candidate for advanced energy storage and electrochemical sensing technologies.
