To Study and Establish the Effective Properties in Hand-knotted Carpets’ Lifetime

Abstract

Today, to increase customers' assurance and enthusiasm in purchasing carpets a minimum of two criteria must be met, including its degree of comfort and permanency in retaining its original appearance. In this study, first, the physical properties of hand-knotted carpets and the qualitative changes most effective in the service life of the carpets are introduced, and then by questionnaire method in gathering information from individual purchaser the efficacies of the properties have been classified. By using the Minitab software the properties have been grouped in terms of top most prioritized effects. This evaluation was carried in a population of 56 people comprised of academic and commercial experts. The results of ANOVA tables under Tukey method have attested to the high efficacy of “resilient pile yarns” by a high percentage of spring rates in response to compression performance of the piles layers. Accordingly, the cohesion in reflexive properties of the pile yarns and durability in the design and patterns of the carpets are related to the stable surface quality. Seven selected functional properties in the first and second groups were proposed to manufacturers for more careful consideration and accuracy in the production design of hand-knotted carpets. Moreover, guaranteeing some or all the selected properties is recommended to be made to customers in order to assure their confidence in the lifetime performance of the carpet.
