A Review on Performance of Spinnerets in Needleless Electrospinning

Document Type : Review Article

Abstract

Electrospinning is a facile and inexpensive method for production of nanofibers, at submicron to nanometer scales, from passage of polymer solutions through a charged jet. In recent years, most electrospinning experiments have been carried out on the basis of one-needle set up with a low production rate which has been an exhaustive challenge for researchers even in laboratory scale. The broad application of this exclusive technique illuminates a road map toward development of new techniques with high production rates. The needleless electrospinning enables the manufacturer to produce nanofiber in industrial scale with acceptable production rate, physical and mechanical specifications. The spinneret in needleless electrospinning plays a crucial role in nanofiber production and the parameters such as geometry, size and rotation rate as operational parameters are able to control nanofibers characteristics. This review is an attempt to introduce a variety of spinnerets in needleless electrospinning processes and explains how spinnerets may affect the quality and productivity of nanofibers.
